It just happens to be one of those things that is easy to take for granted when it’s working well, but impossible to ignore when it isn’t. Many experts suggest getting periodic home plumbing inspections as a way to prevent issues before they happen. An inspection will reveal any problems in the making that could save you a lot of frustration and money later on.
The Inspection
A home plumbing inspection basically consists of a thorough inspection of your home’s entire plumbing system. The plumber will do a visual inspection of all the external parts of the system, then he will use a video camera to inspect the insides of the drains and pipes. It’s important that every aspect of the home’s plumbing system is properly inspected, because if even one faulty part is missed, the whole exercise could be a waste of time.
Should I Get One?
Despite the importance of a well-functioning plumbing system, it isn’t necessary for every single homeowner to run out and pay for one. If your home is relatively new and you haven’t had any problems you’re probably okay. If you’ve been living in your home for a number of years and have never had anyone in to look at the plumbing, you may want to schedule an inspection just to see where you stand.
No plumbing system is going to last forever, and if you know for a fact it has been years since anyone has looked, it’s a good time to get it checked out.
Another good time to get one is if you have been noticing issues with the plumbing. Sometimes, things just start to get a little sluggish and don’t work the same as they used to. This may be an indication of a problem in the making.
It’s important to note that even the tiniest of leaks can add up to huge damage over a short period of time. Just a few drops everyday can lead to mold and mildew and warped or damaged wood in your house. Act quickly when you notice even the smallest plumbing issues.
Buying a Home
If you are buying a home, you will definitely want to have a plumbing inspection as part of the overall home inspection. If you choose not to in order to save some money, you could end up paying for it in a big way if there is a plumbing issue in the house. You’ll also need a home plumbing inspection done if you want to have your own home appraised for any reason. Anytime a house is changing hands or needs to be appraised, the true nature of the plumbing system must be revealed before the deal can be completed.
