Decorating Duds Simplified

Are you moving into a new home? Or maybe you’re starting from scratch yet again and moving into a new abode. Regardless of what phase you are in your life, decorating your house is, both, a physically and emotionally taxing task. Even interior decorators suffer from the inability to summon their creative side, how much more ordinary homeowners trying to personalize their space. While decorating your home the right way depends, ultimately, on your personal preference, there are also definite ways that you can decorate your home the wrong way. Break from away from these cringe-worthy decorating faux pas.

1. Failing to decorate the foyer.

When you enter a home, you will first be ushered into the foyer. Just like with meeting someone new, you need to be impressed right from that first moment of introduction. Being met by a very unforgettable and bare foyer completely deviates from that welcoming concept. Your hall must be eager to greet  guests instead of just turning a cold shoulder.
Quick tip: If you have an attached garage, you would be tempted to use this instead of your foyer making you likely to neglect your foyer. Try using your foyer for a change. To force yourself to use the foyer, make it serve a purpose such as a mess hall where your kids can remove their shoes or drop off their bags. A bench with partitions that serve storage purposes would be an excellent addition in this example.

2. Not using appropriate lighting.

Just like with everything else, having a room that is too bright is just as annoying as having a room that is far too dark. Choosing appropriate lighting can transform a room almost instantaneously.
Quick tip: Give yourself options. The intensity and presence of natural lighting varies within the day. To counter the change in the natural light coming in, you also need to install different types of light fixtures that have varying levels. Dimmers are always great additions to any room and will allow you adjust the intensity of your light depending on  your preference.

3. Having all woodwork painted white.

When it comes to woodwork, it seems that the only options available are the standard varnish and the clinical color white. However, this completely defeats the purpose of having room furnishings that contribute to the overall look of the room.
Quick tip: A pop of color would not hurt. Especially when you have white walls, try to change things up by having woodwork painting in a different color, such as coral for that summer vibe.

4. Stuffing your home with trinkets.

If you are like most people, you may have hoarded hundreds of little pieces of memorabilia throughout the years. While we’re all for preserving memories, some memories are best remembered instead of being collected.
Quick  tip: Have a place in your house where you can show off your beloved collection like those perfect pieces featured in Nick Scali (NCK). However, when you’ve filled up your allotted space, use this as a signal to stop collecting more of your trinkets. Or at least give one item away if you wish to keep a new item.
